Freedom of information, and universal access to it, is crucial to promoting cultural and linguistic diversity, and the United Nations is at the forefront of the battle to protect these rights, a senior information official has said.

“Free speech and media freedom are an inseparable part of the United Nations’ mission for peace, human development and a better world,” Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information Kiyo Akasaka told a global seminar on linguistic diversity, globalization and development in Alexandria, Egypt, on Sunday.

At the division of Indian Sub-continent, Kashmir was one of hundreds of princely states that had to be won over by either India or Pakistan. The maharajah Hari Singh, wanted independence, but faced with an invasion by tribal Militants from Pakistan he agreed to join India in exchange for military help for the security and safety of its people.

India approached the United Nations, which led to a Security Council resolution that a plebiscite be held to determine whether Kashmiris want to join India or Pakistan. At Pakistan’s insistence, independence was not included as an option.

New Delhi has expressed its willingness to hold talks with ”any group” from Kashmir where protests against Indian rule have mounted in recent weeks and government forces have killed at least 65 people, mostly stone-throwing protesters.

The civilian deaths have fuelled anger in the disputed Himalayan region where anti-India sentiments run deep though militant violence has gone down.

PostHeaderIcon Disappearances in Pakistani Kashmir need the attention of legislators

There are reports that dozens of people are missing after their arrest by the intelligence agencies, operating in Pakistani held Kashmir, the Azad Kashmir. It is reported that the people were arrested when they left the Jihad (holy war) inside Indian held Kashmir or stopped providing information to the intelligence agencies about the movements of people across the borders of the Pakistan. The majority of the disappeared persons were residing along the control line, a border line between India and Pakistan, dividing disputed Kashmir, which stretches up to 350 kilo meters. The people residing along the control line are able to enter Indian Territory for their business and they were used by the intelligence agencies as their couriers.
